An interesting study found women who thought they were wearing counterfeit sunglasses lied and cheated more than women who thought they donned authentic designer shades. Wearing fake labels appears to inflate our egos and brighten our self-images, encouraging us to not only be more dishonest, but also more wary of the authenticity of others. As journalist Wray Herbert writes: “Faking it” makes us feel like phonies and cheaters on the inside, and this alienated, counterfeit “self” leads to cheating and cynicism in the real world.

If a pair of sunnies can do this much damage, what could happen when larger products like sofas and dining tables enter the equation?
